The story of two families of the Yorkshire moors--the Earnshaws of Wuthering Heights and the Lintons of Thrushcross Grange--and the adopted foundling, named Heathcliff, who one day lands among them and irrevocably convulses their lives. Raised by the Earnshaws, a family of poor farmers, Heathcliff quickly becomes a favorite of Mr. Earnshaw, inciting the jealousy of his son, Hindley. The younger Earnshaw's cruelty will in turn spark a lifelong vow of vengeance from the intense, feral Heathcliff. At Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff also meets the beautiful, spirited Catherine Earnshaw. From mischievous childhood playmates, the two grow to recognize that they are soul mates, but theirs is not an easy love--and Catherine eventually turns to the neighboring Edgar Linton. Catherine and Heathcliff's twinned tempestuous natures prove too explosive for a conventional happy ending.
